Asking Questions in French

Today we are going to learn how to ask questions in French!

There are five ways to ask questions in French:

  • Making a statement, but raising your voice at the end (used most often in spoken French).

Tu aimes lire les romans? = You like to read books?

Tu aimes jouer à la guitare? = You like to play guitar?

  • Inverting the verb and subject pronoun (used in more formal situations in French and not always possible with “je”)

Aimes-tu lire les romans? = Do you like to read books?

Aimes-tu jouer à la guitare? = Do you like to play guitar

  • Using que or qu’ at the beginning of a sentence with an inverted verb and subject pronoun, for what questions.

Qu’aimes-tu faire? = What do you like to do?

Qu’aimes-tu lire? = What do you like to read?

  • Using est-ce que for yes-no questions, used at the beginning of a sentence.

Est-ce que tu aimes lire les romans? = Do you like to read books?

Est-ce que tu as des chiens? = Do you have any dogs?

  • Using qu’est-ce que for what questions (the longer version of que).

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire? = What do you like to do?

Qu’est-ce que tu aimes regarder? = What do you like to watch?
