Today we are going to learn how to ask questions in French!
There are five ways to ask questions in French:
- Making a statement, but raising your voice at the end (used most often in spoken French).
Tu aimes lire les romans? = You like to read books?
Tu aimes jouer à la guitare? = You like to play guitar?
- Inverting the verb and subject pronoun (used in more formal situations in French and not always possible with “je”)
Aimes-tu lire les romans? = Do you like to read books?
Aimes-tu jouer à la guitare? = Do you like to play guitar
- Using que or qu’ at the beginning of a sentence with an inverted verb and subject pronoun, for what questions.
Qu’aimes-tu faire? = What do you like to do?
Qu’aimes-tu lire? = What do you like to read?
- Using est-ce que for yes-no questions, used at the beginning of a sentence.
Est-ce que tu aimes lire les romans? = Do you like to read books?
Est-ce que tu as des chiens? = Do you have any dogs?
- Using qu’est-ce que for what questions (the longer version of que).
Qu’est-ce que tu aimes faire? = What do you like to do?
Qu’est-ce que tu aimes regarder? = What do you like to watch?
