I was playing around on the keyboard one day when out of nowhere, a dark riff in B minor came flying out of my fingers. It was an aggressive riff, probably the first complicated riff I’d ever come up with, and I liked it so much that I knew I had to use it in a song!
Tell Me (Only in Red) was written out of anger. It’s an amalgamation of several different people I’ve known over the years who I love dearly but who don’t always express themselves when I’ve done something wrong and I don’t know when I’ve offended them.
I’ll admit, I’m not perfect when it comes to expressing myself sometimes, but I try not to be passive aggressive about it. However, I’ve dealt with it a lot in my life from other people, even from people who are close to me who I love dearly. And it frustrates me to no end. If you know me so well, you’ll know that I appreciate the truth. Just tell me what’s going on, and we can deal with it together.
Don’t tell me white words. Tell me only in red. Be angry with me if I’ve done something wrong. Tell me what’s on your mind (suddenly I’m thinking of an Information Society song from the mid-80s!)
